I also wanted to build a pergola, so I did a little research.
Should pergola wobble? If the pergola shakes automatically due to wind or shakes when someone trying to relax by laying on posts then it's not normal you have to fix it. If the pergola wobble because you are pushing the posts with full force then ofcourse it's natural to wobble then in this case you don't need to worry about it.
Is it safe to have a wobbly pergola?
Before asking this question can you please check your bolts, braces, and all the joints that they are perfectly tightened or not.
Check all your posts are perfectly in place because some people have bad placement of posts and this only you check at the time when you install posts.
At the time of installation, you need to give support using temporary wooden braces until the concrete is fully dry and the posts are stable.
Otherwise, some posts are leaning in other direction and so the foundation is not strong enough to take the weight of the roof.
If it is not shaking in the wind then it is okay and perfectly fine. On the other hand, if it is wobbling in the wind then you need to reinforce your pergola to reduce wobble.
If you are pushing the posts heavily with your hand power then obviously a pergola wobble.
Just wind check your pergola it is not wobbling then it is fine and safe to have fun under it else if it is too loose structure.
Why do pergola wobbles?
1. I think footings needs to be buried because its a basic thing when we want to build a building then you want your foundation is to be strong enough to support your building.
2. Height of the pergola not be so tall, it needs to be how deep your footings are and strong enough to take the load. Your structure feels to be compact to your eyes.
3. Some people send pictures on the forums of their pergola and they do not have any braces to their pergolas. So the braces are must to improve pergola stability.
4. In some cases nuts and bolts are not tightened enough to provide reinforcement to the posts, rafters, beams, and especially brackets if you are using them.
Which style is the best to improve the stability? [Freestanding or Attached]
According to me both the styles of pergola are good. Only the thing makes the difference is purpose for which purpose you want to install the pergola.
If you want more stable pergola or stability matters you most then you can go for house attached pergola.
If style matters a lot for you then you can go for a freestanding pergola.
If you are a bachelor or you have no kids then you can go for a freestanding pergola. Install it in the middle of your yard it gives a more stylish look to your yard. You can also decorate using flowers and so many other things for your loved ones.
If you have kids then the house attached pergola is the best because in the rainy season it's safe for kids to have fun just outside of your door in the safe place.
How to Stabilize a Pergola
As per my research there are only couple of solutions to improve stability of pergola and the main basic reason why pergola wobble is bracing are absent in the pergola.
In the house attached pergola bracing needed for the front posts so that's why this more stable pergola style.
But in the freestanding pergola style you need to add braces to all posts.
Grab yourself some scrap wood or three 8 foot long 2*4s and cut to length with 45 degrees angles on each ends. We'll be putting these in the corners!
Where to add the braces in the pergola?
There are two front post in the pergola in some cases there are different number of posts if you have a wide pergola. So follow this instruction as per your pergola and balanced the instruction out.
If there are two front post then you can joint post to the beam using a brace and another post to the rafter.
The angle of braces is to be 45 degrees or you can just install the braces in the angle where posts are strong enough to pass the support to beams and the rafters.
